Burn On Lyrics

Artist: Randy Newman
Album: Sail Away

There's a red moon rising
On the Cuyahoga River
Rolling into Cleveland to the lake

There's a red moon rising
ON the Cuyahoga River
Rolling into Cleveland to the lake

There's an oil barge winding
Down the Cuyahoga River
Rolling into Cleveland to the lake

There's an oil barge winding
Down the Cuyahoga River
Rolling into Cleveland to the lake

Cleveland city of light city of magic
Cleveland city of light you're calling me
Cleveland, even now I can remember
'Cause the Cuyahoga River
Goes smokin' through my dreams

Burn on, big river, burn on
Burn on, big river, burn on
Now the Lord can make you tumble
And the Lord can make you turn
And the Lord can make you overflow
But the Lord can't make you burn

Burn on, big river, burn on
Burn on, big river, burn on

Ever Since I first watched the movie "Major League" This song comes to mind when ever I hear someone mention Cleveland. It's a simple but strangly hypnotic little song. Funny Movie too. "Just a Bit outside!"
by EPA on 4/3/2011 12:06pm
good thing a hollywood film comes to mind first and not river pollution, pollution to the point of being able to be SET ON FIRE. A RIVER OF FIRE!

MJT is an idiot. Doesn't he know about the shocking environmental disaster the song commemorates? It creeps me out that fools like this are allowed to vote.
by QED on 6/30/2011 7:09am
I guess you people never saw Major League. That movie was a baseball classic.

Let's poll 1000 Americans from every region of the country, and ask them which they associate this song with more - Major League or an environmental disaster.

So far, we got 3 for Major League, 2 for environmental disaster. :)

4 for Major League! Go Tribe!!
by CMG on 10/4/2011 3:44pm
Chalk up another one for Major League and I do know the relevance of this song. Don't really understand why MJT would be an idiot cause this song reminds him of Major League, or what relevance it has on his ability to vote. If everyone had the same train of thought as Erna there would be no reason to vote because everyone's agenda would be the same. Lighten up and enjoy life a little. Gotta go, there's a guy on the other line calling about some whitewalls.

Major League!! Best Movie Ever

this discussion is very special. i don't understand why you can't be aware of both an environmental disaster and the movie major league. the people in cleveland are well aware of how dirty the damn river is. just let them enjoy the movie for what it is.

We in New Jersey used to talk about our beloved Passaic River the same way. I had to explain the relevance of the song to my son when we first watched the movie together when he was a youngster, and he was looking at me with this expression like, "Are you s--------g me, a river caught on fire?" Great movie, and by the way, Jesus Christ could hit a curveball.

Song reminds me of Major League first and formost. And the real story behind the river catching on fire is the fact that the fire was only about as big around as a trash can. The story grew and grew over the years. The river wasn't that polluted.

Loved CMG's comment and dpole11's observation about the nature of this discussion! Agree completely. It would be quite fun to know what Newman would make of this mini debate on what the song most inspires thoughts on . . . especially considering he gave explicit consent for the song to be used in the film. Tsssk. "Trivializing your own song and the meaning behind it! Mr. Newman, you shouldn't be allowed to vote!" ;)

Come on, who isn't reminded of Major League when they hear this song?! And yeah, like a lot of you, I don't see how MJT is an idiot...
by Huh on 12/16/2012 11:33pm
In MJT's defense, while it may remind many people of the movie as it does for me, he didn't say that. He said when he hears of Cleveland it reminds him of this song because of the movie. He didn't say anything about of what this song reminds him. ;P

What most people don't get is that the Cuyahoga river caught fire many times. So did almost every other river in the Midwest. Rivers caught fire all the time in the 50's and 60's (and sometimes into the 70's). The Cuyahoga is no more special than any other "River of Fire" other than the environmentalist movement used the fire in 1969 as a marketing agent to further the cause of the river. By doing so they embarrassed Cleveland and to this day people still refer to the river as "dirty". Nothing could be further from the truth. Cleveland's waterways are beautiful.

Remember it as a Randy Newman tune from well before he started putting words in Buzz Lightyear's mouth (and placing songs in sort of funny MLB-themed movies)
by Bill on 10/20/2013 8:32pm
The song only reminds me of Major League. And yes, the Cuyahoga river is as clean as almost any river can be in America at this time. It hasn't been badly polluted since the early 70's.
by Paddywagon on 7/13/2014 3:33pm
It reminds me of both. And because the cuyahoga caught fire in 1969, there was a national public outcry for cleaner water. That resulted in the Clean Water Act.

The cuyahoga had NO fish in 1969. Now it has more than 60 species of fish. Things are much better.

And I Still love watching Major League....
